Betanzos & La Coruna Tour  

After departing from the pier, you will enjoy a brief drive south to Pontedume, a traditional Galician town on the Eume River estuary. Because the city is pedestrian friendly, you can make the most of your free time to explore its marquee attractions. Be sure to see the 12th-century churches in Old Town and the keep of a medieval castle that rises above the waterfront.
 
Next, you will drive on to Betanzos, a gorgeous city at the confluence of the Mendo and Mandeo rivers. Like many cities in the region, Betanzos features an abundance of buildings with glass-enclosed balconies or “galerias,” especially around the waterfront.
During free time in Betanzos, expect to see medieval churches, historical monuments and serene plazas ,the original town gates and a maze of narrow streets leading into the well-preserved Old Town.
Continue to La Coruna, a maritime city that sits on a peninsula that juts out into the surrounding sea. Upon arriving, you will view many of the city’s considerable highlights that include aromatic gardens and a soaring obelisk built to commemorate the new millennium. It’s carved with scenes depicting the history of Coruna.
Another highlight is the Castle of San Anton, a low-slung fortress built in the 16th century. It successfully helped defend the city against an assault by England’s Sir Francis Drake in 1589.
However, the city’s most recognized symbol is the Tower of Hercules, the only fully preserved Roman lighthouse still used for maritime signaling. It has been deemed a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its architectural integrity and importance in the Roman Empire’s sea route.
Your driving tour resumes as you pass the newly refurbished aquarium before stopping downtown at Maria Pita Square where you will have some free time to explore the nearby shops and cafés. The popular plaza is named for a woman who heroically helped defend the city during Sir Francis Drake’s attack. Relax on your drive back to Ferrol.
