Jewish Heritage in Trancoso, Belmonte & Coimbra Tour (from Lisbon)
Day 1: Trancoso & Belmonte
Your day begins with a drive from Lisbon to the medieval town of Trancoso. Trancoso predates the reign of Dom Pedro I, who gave for the first time, in 1364, Jewry apart, located at the “street of half the village where they had always lived” (LIPINER, 1996:29). There are around 150 religious marks accounted for in this region.
Continue to Belmonte, a town that has retained its medieval atmosphere, among its most interesting sites are the 13th century castle, a Romanesque-Gothic church and the Cabral family Pantheon. Houses with crosses engraved stone close to the doors were inhabited by New Christians, Jews who had been unable to leave Portugal and were baptized. These “Crypto-Jews” publicly followed Catholic rituals but in the privacy of their own homes maintained their religion and culture and celebrated Hebrew rites on Holy Days. In 1993, the community began building a new synagogue as part of a very interesting revival. You will witness the synagogue and learn more about the Jewish community.
Overnight in Belmonte.
Day 2: Coimbra University (UNESCO)
Depart from your hotel en route to Coimbra, the birthplace of six Portuguese kings and the seat of Portugal's first university, reputedly the second-oldest in the world. We will visit the university as well as Coimbra's ancient cathedral, one of the finest examples of Romanesque architecture in Portugal. Experience the city by strolling through its picturesque and romantic streets filled with stairways, courtyards and medieval arches before arriving at the the commercial heart of the city filled with lively cafes, pastry shops, restaurants, boutiques and other shops.
