Evora (UNESCO) , Arraiolos & Winery Tour
The ancient walled city of Évora rises out of the vast Alentejano plain 62 km west of the Spanish border. It was taken from the Moors in 1166 by an outlaw knight, Gerald the Fearless, who scaled the walls at night on a ladder of lances. Évora later became a popular residence of Portuguese kings, but fell out of favour after Spain's annexation of Portugal in 1580. Today, it is one of the loveliest places to visit in the whole of Southern Europe, with several unique attractions to explore.
Depart from Lisbon to Evora, crossing the Tagus River, and travel through the beautiful and bucolic landscape of olive and cork oak trees and vineyards. Your first stop will be the quaint village of Arraiolos, where you will view the white immaculate houses (that gave the town its nickname) framed with blue or yellow stripes and the castle at the top of the village that keeps guard over the fields of Alentejo. Experience the typical slow pace of its people that know very well the “art of living” and the embroiderers working in the streets making the famous genuine handmade Arraiolos carpets. These carpets still preserve some elements of the Moorish culture of Portugal.
Continue to Évora, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where you will enjoy a traditional local lunch before your sightseeing begins. In the narrow streets of the whitewashed town, your walking tour will visit some of the most important monuments; the Roman Temple, the Romanesque-Gothic Cathedral, Saint Francis Church with the "Bones Chapel," and the local university. You can also admire the diversity and authenticity of local handicraft of cork, ceramic and copper objects with some free time to discover more of the city during the afternoon.
Completing the tour, you will stop at an award winning wine estate for a guided tour and a chance to taste the wine and olive oil. Your tour concludes upon arrival to Lisbon.
